Lightning claims two in Udupi dist

Incessant rains lash DK, Udupi; houses, electric poles damaged

The rain also claimed one life in Karkala. A woman was killed when lightning struck her at Kambalabettu in Kervashe village of Karkala. The deceased has been identified as Appi (65).

In another incident, Anand Devadiga (30), suffered serious injuries when lightning struck him when he was talking over mobile phone outside his home at Kergalu in Baindoor around 7.30 pm on Friday. Though he was rushed to the hospital, he breathed his last en route to the hospital.

An employee of a hotel in Mumbai, Anand had married Geetha on May 18, just 17 days ago.

Owing to the lack of storm water drains, water logged roads were common in Mangalore City. Two houses have been damaged in Golikatte in Puttur as lightning struck the house. The house belonged to JD(S) General Secretary Ibrahim Golikatte. The loss is estimated to be Rs 40,000. Electrical goods have been damaged in the house. A certain Babu’s house was damaged. A huge tree fell on Mani-Mysore state highway at Santyaru, thus locking the Santyaru-Panaje road for sometime. In the last 24 hours, Puttur taluk has received 12 mm rainfall.

Bantwal taluk has received 25 mm rainfall. 2  electric poles have been damaged as soil caved near Moodanadgodu.

In Udupi

Heavy rains lashed Udupi district on Friday. Udupi received 9 mm, Kundapur 8.4 mm, Karkala 40.2 mm rainfall. Coconut trees of Madhava Amin fell at Kota and the loss is extimated to be Rs 6,000.

As the road works are in progress, artificial floods were common on roads in Udupi. Owing to lack of storm water drains, water clogged at Kalsanka, Gundibailu, Karavali Junction, near Sharada Hotel and Udyavara, thus disrupting the movement of vehicles. The house of a certain Gudda Mayi was damaged when lightning.
