Faculty members of colleges will soon get freedom from carrying out compulsory research to get scores on this head for promotion.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has decided to do away with this provision to enable lecturers/professors to focus more on teaching.

However, faculty members of universities will have to continue carrying out research and take classes as well to get scores under various academic performance indicator (API).

The ministry is in process of formulating revised regulations for appraisal and promotion of the higher education faculty members with separate API for those teaching in colleges and universities, respectively.

The revised assessment rules for promotion of college and university  professors/lecturers will be notified by the University Grants Commission (UGC) within a month.

The proposal for the formulation of "a new assessment criteria"  for the recruitment and promotion of the university  lecturers/professors "in lieu of API" was one of the agenda of the meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE).

"There will be no change in the recruitment rules. However, there will be changes in API regime. College teachers will not be required to do compulsory research but they will have to teach. University  lecturers/professors will have to do research (apart from teaching)," HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said at a press conference.
