BBMP mulls new advt policy

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is planning to frame a new advertisement policy for hoardings within the civic body's limits.

Post GST, the BBMP is no longer collecting advertisement tax. The new tax system prohibits a municipal body from collecting taxes.

"The BBMP is not collecting advertisement tax after the implementation of GST. We are only collecting the dues that were pending before July 1, 2017. However, there is a provision where we can frame new policies to collect revenue from advertisements," said BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad.

"The new policy can help in collecting revenue for the Palike and we can look at various methods. We can look at charging for ground rent where there is a hoarding or even auction it," Prasad said.

The commissioner also said that only 865 illegal hoardings out of the 2,431 are removed from the base.

"According to Section 134 of the Karnataka Municipal Corporation (KMC) Act, BBMP can give permission whether to put up a flex or not," said Opposition leader Padmanabha Reddy.
