Three staffers of a school in the Una town of Himachal Pradesh were arrested by the Delhi Police on Saturday on charges of leaking the CBSE Class XII Economics question paper three days before the exams.

The trio, Rakesh Kumar, Amit Sharma and Ashok Kumar, have been working at the DAV Centenary Public School and were arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police after a lengthy interrogation during which they revealed to have circulated the Economics papers on at least 40 WhatsApp groups.

According to the police, Rakesh Kumar, the Economics teacher at the DAV School and superintendent at a DAV exam centre, collected the Economics question papers on March 23 along with the bundles of the Computer Science paper, the exam for which was scheduled on that day.

While Rakesh took the Computer Science paper bundle to the Jawahar Navodaya Public School, where he was the superintendent of the exam centre, and handed over the Economics paper to his colleagues Amit and Ashok, who work at the DAV School as clerk and peon respectively, R P Upadhayay, special commissioner (crime), told reporters here.

The duo took out a copy of the Economics paper and sent it to Rakesh through WhatsApp, Upadhayay said adding that Rakesh then got it handwritten by a student whom he tutored.

"The hand-written copy was sent by Rakesh to a relative of his in Chandigarh, whose son was appearing for the Class XII exam. The hand-written copy got leaked on WhatsApp groups that way," he said.

Later, the three accused deleted the WhatsApp messages and destroyed the hand-written copy to hide digital footprints.

Police said no money angle to the crime has been detected so far and their investigations so far have revealed that Rakesh wanted to help the first student, who was weak in Economics, as well as his relative.

The leak was detected after an envelope containing four images of the hand-written Economics paper was delivered to the CBSE headquarters in Delhi on the evening of the scheduled date of the exam on March 26.
