Man dupes 'dates' posing as woman on dating app, arrested

A 25-year-old man posed as a woman on a mobile dating app and cheated several men before the Cyber Crime Police(CCB) arrested him on Friday.

Sagar Rao a resident of Whitefield, created several fake accounts posing as different women on the 'Freedating app' and the website- freedating.com.

He used to get in touch with male users on the app and would make them believe that the accounts belonged to women. They would then continue talking through WhatsApp.

When there was a certain amount of friendship developed, Rao would fix a date to meet them but begin demanding money to actually meet. Once his victims would transfer the money to his bank account-a day before the 'date'- Rao would stop answering calls.

On 10 October 2017, a victim's father lodged a complaint with the CCB. The complainant had transferred Rs 71,00 to an unknown bank account, reportedly belonging to the suspect.

According to the police officials, the suspect has duped two guys by creating accounts with fake identities like Shilpa, Sonia Jain, Manish Jain and others. Sagar tried to cheat more than 12 people through the app.

"The suspect used the money that he got from his victims to buy fancy gifts for his girlfriend," official added.
