The struggle for a separate University began 10 years ago when Davangere was made a new district. M S K Shastry, a social activist formed Davangere Vishwavidyalaya Horata Samiti under the aegis of which many protests were held. A delegation comprising Samiti members met CM B S Yeddyurapa during the special session of State Legislature in Belgaum. The Samiti members apprised CM about the hardships faced by students of Davangere, Chitradurga, Haveri and Bellary districts as they were forced to pursue PG education in far away places.

Students of Chitradurga and Davangere districts had to go to Kuvempu University in Shimoga district, Bellary students to Gulbarga and those from Haveri had to pursue PG courses at Karnatak University, Dharwad. The Samiti members attempted to further their cause by projecting Davangere City as centre to these districts.

Higher learning

Located in the centre of the State, Davangere has two medical colleges, three engineering and MBA colleges, a PG centre of Kuvempu University and other institutions of higher learning. Considering the necessary infrastructure in the place for establishment of a University, the CM allotted Rs 10 crore for the purpose in the budget. Dr Indumathi, who was serving in Mysore University, was appointed as special officer for Davangere University.

At Tolahunse

The new University will come up at Shivagangotri PG centre of Kuvempu University in Tolahunse near Davangere. With two academic blocks, four hostels, quarters for academic and non teaching staff, canteen, guest house and a health centre, the sprawling 74 acre Shivagangotri campus has the necessary infrastructure for establishment of an University. Along with Shivagangotri PG centre, UBDT Engineering College and Fine Arts College of Kuvempu University in Davangere will be transferred to the new University.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Davangere University Special Officer Dr Indumathi informed that the work related to marking the jurisdiction of the University and enlisting the colleges is on. Details related to the assets of Kuvempu University in Chitradurga and Davangere district is being collected. After completing the process, feasibility and status report will be submitted to the Government by the end of this month.

The University will come into existence after amending the Karnataka Universities Act 2000. Dr Indumathi said that admission will commence after a notification regarding the amendment is issued.
