Sci-fi at its best

DVD reviews

The classic good-vs-evil story set in a galaxy far, far way saw director George Lucas achieve the status of a film legend almost instantaneously. Now, at a time when computer-generated imaging has improved to the extent of not only creating life-like dinosaurs a la Jurassic Park but also a completely new planet a la Avatar, some of the effects in the earlier Star Wars films do look dated, but that does not take away from the series the fact that they were films that showed us what a sci-fi epic should look like.

Now, with the release of the two Star Wars trilogies in India makes it a time for connoiseurs of sci-fi films to walk down the path of nostalgia. One thing that immediately separates the two trilogies is the fact that the ‘prequels’, made later, made for far less compelling viewing as compared to the original three films (now Episodes IV, V and VI) – the New Hope, the Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi.

What makes the DVDs of the original trilogy a collectors’ item is the fact that they are special 2-disc sets, with a lot of extras. Also, they are the versions with enhances effects, released by Lucas in 1997 to mark the 20th annniversary of the release of the first film. For all those who want to travel to the worlds of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia,  Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO, this series is a must have.
