“This is a very rare opportunity in my life to be able to weave a tapestry involving three generations of singers and fusing various musical styles including Folk, Carnatic and Western to unveil the universality of Tamil as a language,” Rahman said, after Chief Minister M Karunanidhi released the CD of the WCTC’s theme song here on Saturday. WCTC is slated to begin from June 23 in Coimbatore.

In a brief speech that ended with his now-favourite one liner, “all glory to God”, Rahman lived up to being the ‘Mozart of the East’, as he thanked all those who helped to create the theme song. DMK leader K Anbazhagan, Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin and DMK MP Kanimozhi were present at the launch function. Noted violinist, L Subramanian, received the first CD of the theme song.

Rahman has worked with an array of singers including Madurai T M Soundararajan, one of the oldest playback singers of Tamil cinema, and younger talents like Aruna Sairam and Shruthi Hassan for the theme song. It has been penned by ‘Kalaignar’ Karunanidhi, making it Rahman’s first collaboration with the 86-year-old DMK patriarch. Beginning with the words ‘Perupokkum Ella Uyirukkum’ (celebrate the equality of all life), the WCTC theme song breezes through the history of the Tamil language.
