A healthy and timely diet keeps us energetic and attentive. Plus, a pleasant food court is an ideal place for both physical and mental recreation. It may be for these reasons that every educational institution has been taking interest in providing homely food to the students.

The New Horizon College of Engineering is one such institution which has many well-built food courts on campus. But the spacious college canteen, located at the heart of the campus, is the most popular hangout of the students. The airy building is circular in shape with clean platforms encircling it. Students sit on these platforms and chill out with their peers.

The canteen serves both fast food and lunch. Everyday, the menu board displays different items to ensure variety. Students get South Indian idli vada, kesari bath, dosas and Chinese victuals like fried rice, noodles and manchurian items. Different rice items are prepared everyday, among which, bisibelebath has many takers.
The students also make use of this place to unwind and simply hang out between classes. “Canteen is completely free from classroom etiquettes and other restrictions. Our professors treat us like friends while having lunch and we share some light moments together,” says Avinash, one of the students.

In any college, students use canteens for multi purposes. Food comes first in their priority and meeting friends, completing notes, exchanging gossip and light dating issues also get their due share. “After classrooms, canteen is one of the busiest corners on our campus. Here, we meet our friends who are scattered across different streams. The location is highly strategic and we can keep an eye on the entire campus from here,” says Pavan.

Along with the main canteen, the college has two more small food shops which sell bakery items, juices, chats and ice creams.
“We buy tasty golas and ice creams at Gola’s Shop. Whenever we feel exhausted and bored, we come to this shop. During monsoons, this tiny joint struggles to meet the demands for hot tea and crispy snacks. We also get milkshakes and fruit juices here,” says Sai.

Dolly, another student, votes for Cheta’s Shop which sells bakery products along with stationary items.
“The cakes are attractive and come in different varieties. The shop carries no nameplate. Hence, we call it by the name of the person who sits on the counter. We have become so familiar with Cheta that he does not mind if we pay him after a few days,” says Dolly.
