Today, the job market demands skills and not just a degree. Signing up for a course just for the sake of getting a degree will take you nowhere. A smart student is one who identifies a course that not only gives a recognised degree from a recognised university but also helps him land a plum job.

Most science students dream of getting into an engineering or medical college. Thousands of students have written CET 2010 and other exams like IIT, AIEEE, AIPMT, JIPMER, etc. Yet not everybody makes it to engineering or medical college.

Eligibility
Pass in 2nd PUC. Some colleges require at least 50 per cent marks. For all the courses, the student must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology in 2nd PUC. For Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy, the student must have studied Mathematics also. For updated criteria, please contact the respective university/ college. Lateral entry is also offered to those who have a Diploma in paramedical sciences (admission to the branch which they have already studied in the Diploma course).

Common subjects studied during the first year are Human Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Applied Pathology & Microbiology, Pharmacology, Community Medicine & Computer Applications. From the second year onwards, the student will study subjects related to his/ her specialisation. Most of the subjects are taught practically since the institutes have their own hospitals. This is an excellent opportunity to learn almost everything hands-on.

Job prospects
The students who pass out of such BSc courses can be certain of landing a job. Most hospitals advertise vacancies in  the classifieds columns in newspapers,  and on online job portals.
Freshers usually start at Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 a month. The pay package differs between the specialisations. With a minimum of 2-3 years experience and good net-working skills, one can look forward for a future in West — especially in the United States or Canada.
There are many courses like Master’s/ PG Diploma in Hospital Management, PG Diploma in Imaging Technology, MSc in Echo Cardiogram and so on,  which will not only enhance skill sets but also help the student find a rewarding and challenging job.

Mangalore University offers several courses. But the unique course — MSc in Yogic Sciences (started for the first time in country) — provides new avenues to the students to learn, practise and propagate the techniques of this ancient science.
