Advani gets relief in Babri case

Allahabad HC dismisses CBI revision petition
Last Updated 20 May 2010, 18:48 IST

The petition had challenged a lower court order which dropped proceedings against the leader and some others for hatching a conspiracy to demolish the disputed structure in Ayodhya.

A single judge bench of the high court comprising Justice Alok Kumar Singh rejected the CBI plea against the local court order of May 4, 2001, regarding the case crime no-197/92 lodged at the Ram Janambhoomi Police Station in Ayodhya soon after the demolition.
The lower court had dropped the conspiracy charges against Advani and 20 others. The CBI had challenged the order.

Besides Advani, others who have got relief, include former BJP leader Uma Bharti, BJP MP M M Joshi, Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackerey and former UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh. The court said the revision petition is liable to be dismissed as a similar trial is currently pending at the special Raebareli court. The judgement would however have no impact on the ongoing Babri Masjid demolition case being tried in the special Raebareli court.

The CBI clubbed two separate FIRs, which had been registered at the Ram Janambhoomi Police Station, to file a composite chargesheet.
