City College, Jayanagar concluded its placement session recently after placing a good number of students in marketing, finance and accounting fields in reputed companies. More than nine companies turned up on the campus for placement activities. They include IBM Daksha, Infosys, Reuters, Citi Bank, Ernst and Young, JP Morgan, Axis Bank and IDBI. They have hired students from both B Com and BBM sections.

“Around 50 percent of students from B Com have been placed already. The percentage of students who got placed from BBM is slightly low when compared to those from B Com. Most of them want to continue their education, hence they stayed away from the process,” says Prof Malini N, HoD for undergraduate Commerce and Management section, who is also the placement co-ordinator of the college.

Some of the companies conducted their selection process at the campus and a few of them invited students to their respective locations. Boyai Singh, one of the students, who was hired by J P Morgan, says, “Facing interview in the company premises was more challenging than attending campus recruitment. In the college, the familiar environment and faculty members give us confidence, whereas in this situation, I became a bit nervous due to the fully corporatised environment. Thankfully, everything went well and I was able to sail through all the levels.”

IBM has hired around eight students from both BBM and B Com for its accounting sections. “I was really nervous on the day of interview and tried real hard to remain calm and confident. My teachers came to my rescue by expressing their faith in me. It built up my confidence and I cleared all the rounds,” says Deepu Longjade from final year BBM.

Infosys was looking out for apt candidates for its BPO openings and has hired 12 students. “I was up-to-date with  my subject and improved my aptitude skills before attending the interview. Our college had arranged coaching classes and conducted mock interviews which helped us polish our communication skills and to re-focus on the basics of business management,” says Laxman Kumar Shah, who was selected by Infosys.

As the placement session is over, students are preparing for exams and getting ready to enter the corporate world soon. “Facing the interview was an experience full of tension and apprehension, which culminated into a celebration after getting selected,” says Vikram Singh who was taken in by IBM.
