'Imbibe eco-friendly practices'

Speaking after inaugurating various programmes held as a part of World Environment Day here at Pilikula, he said that nature has its own way to counter the damage done to it and protect itself from the danger. “The motto of this year’s World Environment Day is ‘your planet needs you. Planet needs us. We also need our planet for survival or else we will be extinct from this planet. We need to understand the planet in a better way.”

Dr Sancheti said: “We have made tremendous progress in the field of science and technology. However, are we able to control the nature or clone the nature?” he asked.
“We have not been able to predict the nature by any theory. Let us take an oath that minimum harm is done to the nature by optimal utilisation of natural resources.”  
He said “green is the path and direction for us.”

MCF Vice-President Prabhakar Rao said: “We need to have concern towards environment throughout the year.” Sustainable development is possible only through using the recycled products and preserving the natural resources for the future generation.  Zilla Panchayat in-charge President Venkat Dambekodi, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board Senior Officer Sadik Ahmmed, Pilikula Nisargadhama Executive Director J R Lobo, Pilikula Science Centre Director Prof K V Rao, CIMAP Emeritus Scientist Dr R R Rao and others were present on the occasion.

Expo on plants, marine life

An exhibition on plants, marine life and solar energy was held at the Pilikula Science Centre.

The photographs exhibited is like a journey into the wonder world of plants around us. The eye-catching photographs were not only pleasing to the eyes but also were informative. The local name and botanical names of the plants are written in bold on the photographs.

There were varieties of saplings in the exhibition. They included endangered plants of Western Ghats like myristicaceae (rama pathre), ‘kallu bale,’ ‘ashoka,’ ‘raktha honne,’ ‘bale honne,’ ‘anavu.’ Medicinal plants like ‘dalchini’ (lauraceae), ‘Naga sampige,’ ‘Arjuna’. Wild ornamental plants like ‘renje’ were on display. Dye yielding plants, bio-fuel plants were also displayed.

The exhibition also had the photographs of various trees found in arboretum in Pilikula, endemic species of Western Ghat, diversity of seeds of Western Ghat, ornamental plants of Western Ghat, medicinal plants of Western Ghat.

 Apart from this, wildlife photography of Dr Akhter Hussain was also on display. Moreover, the marine species found in Karnataka, fresh water fish, respirable dust sample machine, solar equipment were also on display.
