“Rahul ke yogdan ke karan Congress ko achcha parinam mila (the Congress got good results owing to the contribution by Rahul)”, Ms Gandhi said while addressing party workers in her Lok Sabha constituency of Raebareli.

Sonia, who was on a thanksgiving visit to Raebareli, also praised her daughter Priyanka and said that both herself and Rahul got time to campaign across the country only because Priyanka had taken charge of campaigning in Raebareli and Amethi.

Gandhi said the Congress victory was reflective of the fact the people have rejected the politics of caste and religion and instead voted for development.

She assured the people of her constituency that she will ensure completion of the pending developmental projects and also bring some new schemes for the benefit of the people.

Apparently aware of the acute power shortage in the area, Ms Gandhi also assured to “personally” look into the matter.

Bandh call

The local ‘Vyapar Mandal’ (Traders’ Organisation) had also called a ‘bandh’ in protest against erratic power supply. The town has been getting power for barely 13-14 hours daily.

Expressing their anger over the power situation, the traders said that the people of the area needed power and not ‘thanks’.

Addressing the workers Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was in-charge of the Raebareli and Amethi Lok Sabha constituencies, referred to the low voting percentage in the constituency though she also admitted that heat was one of the factors behind it.

Sonia also held a meeting with the local party leaders during which she asked them to get ready for the next assembly polls in UP. She laid stress on strengthening the party organisation at the grass root level.

Earlier, Sonia and Priyanka were accorded a rousing welcome upon their arrival at Raebareli. A large number of people and party workers lined up on both sides of the streets and showered flower petals on their vehicles.
