Shandy maidan to get a facelift

Last Updated 04 July 2010, 17:03 IST

The shandy maidan will get a facelift soon and the plan of the proposed three storied market complex is expected to arrive at the City Municipal Council in 15 days, said a source from the Town Municipal Council.

The vendors and the customers have been facing lots of problems due to lack of infrastructure. The situation used to get worse during the rainy season and lack of infrastructure had compelled the vendors to make brisk business with umbrellas open.
“There is no proper shed or covered places at shandy maidan and hence some of us sit with our umbrellas open, some make temporary plastic shelter and some cover their commodities for sale with plastic,” says a vendor

“During rainy season the stagnant water turns entire market into mushy land. It is very difficult for us to come here and make our weekly purchases. It is time the authorities take note of the situation and do something,” says a santhe maidan loyalist.

It is said that taking note of the problems faced by the people, the Municipal Council has finally decided to provide proper seating facilities for vendors.

Sources informed that City Municipal Council has decided to build a full fledged market complex at a cost of Rs 1.8 crore under SFC fund and 12th Finance Plan 2007-08.

“The plan is to build a three storied market complex bringing all vendors under one roof for the convenience of both the vendors and the customers. With the success of the project, flower vendors, vegetable, fruit vendors, fish, meat and grocers will all be placed in a modern building. The plan of the complex is expected to be ready by 15 days,” informed a source from Council.

With the Council opening its eyes to the problems persisting in the market, the vendors and the customers are happy that their pleas have finally been taken into consideration.
