Last Updated 05 July 2010, 18:36 IST

Congress workers sent bulk SMSes to cell phone users appealing the Chief Minister to reduce petrol prices by reducing sales tax.

One such message reads: “Appeal to Chief Minister Yeddyurappa on Bharat Bundh to reduce petrol price by reducing taxes”.

The SMS further compared price of petrol per litre in Bangalore - Rs. 57.86 with that prevailing in other metros - Mumbai Rs 55.51; Chennai Rs 54.61 and Delhi Rs 50.52.  The State government levies a sales tax of 25 pc on petrol and 18 pc on diesel.

BJP general secretary Ananth Kumar, in his press conference on Monday, said: “The sole reason for increase in petrol prices and high inflation is the UPA. The public, penalised by high inflation and increase in price of essential commodities voluntarily observed the bundh. Their anger is evident in the success of the bundh”, he said.

Also ,the increase in inflation was not only failure of the UPA government but was a also “mega scam”. A few middlemen and traders had been creating the shortage of commodities leading to inflation, he added.
