Police plan counselling for drug addicts

Last Updated 10 July 2010, 17:46 IST

Not only the police would keep a track on the drug peddlers who are operating in the City but they will also offer counselling to drug addicts by renowned psychiatrists of the City. The idea behind counselling is that instances of drug peddling would come down if the number of addicts too falls.

“Information of drug addicts will be collected over mobile phone of accused who were earlier caught by us. After obtaining all the details we will inform the parents of addicts,” Joint commissioner of police Alok Kumar told Deccan Herald.

“Drug addict children and their parents will be called to our office and will be advised to give up their addiction. We will insist parents to take extra care on their children and keep an eye on their activities,” he added. Police believe that it is not the person but the circumstances tht make people fall in to bad habits. If proper counselling is given to them they might quit it. The police department is planning to rope in renowned psychiatrists for proper counselling to the addicts, their parents and their relatives.

City police had arrested many of foreigners and local people on charges of selling drugs. Recently four people from South Africa, Ghana, Niegera were detained and more than fourty lakhs worth cocaine was seized.

“We are finding difficulties to curb the racket from its root level. If addiction ratio comes down drug peddling ratio too will decrease,” said another senior officer. Two Nigerians Chigindu Emakachiku and Ogugua Benneth were arrested on July 5 this year who are still in judicial custody. Police have traced their call detials of their mobile phones. Police have identified their clients and soon the parents or relatives may be summoned for counselling at a destined place.
