JOIN USMoonlight Romance tipped to win
The ten-horse Derby, to be run over a distance of 2000 metres, wears a fairly open look. The favourite is CD Katrak-trained Moonlight Romance. Richard Hughes -- the jockey who had huge success with Jacqueline -- has been specially flown in for the race and, given his credentials, has a very good chance of taking home the coveted title.
The filly from Mumbai is the winner of the Juvenile Fillies Championship and finished behind Siachen in the Fillies Trial Stakes after being bogged down in traffic. She is sure to put on a good show after experiencing track conditions at the BTC for the first time.
The horse that is most likely to give Moonlight Romance a close run is Sun Kingdom, trained by Irfan Ghatala. The winner of the Juvenile Million and the Colts Trials Stakes is the only unbeaten horse in the field, and the big question is whether Suraj Narredu can ride himself to his first Derby win.
Suraj’s father, Satish, a former jockey and now a trainer who narrowly missed out on a win with Sprint Star in the HDIL BTC Anniversary Cup on Saturday, is keen to see his son take home an elusive Derby win. “I’m hoping for a victory. Hopefully, Suraj will ride him well and come up trumps.”
Late-entry Immense is capable of pulling off victory. Trainer Arjun Mangalorkar was confident of a good showing from his colt. “I’ve paid a lot of money to get him into the race and I’m confident he can pull off a win. The distance is not going to be a problem and with JG Sampson on board, he is quite capable of a victory.”
The Leader, also to be ridden by a jockey flown in for the Derby in Daniel Grant, is another potential winner. The Hyderabad-based horse has been successful on his home turf with a couple of victories and finished second in the Poonawalla Multimillion in Mumbai.
Generally, Pesi Shroff’s horses are right up there in the running for the top prize, Jacqueline being the best example. But with Eloise, to be ridden by B Prakash, and Christopher Alford-steered Xisca hardly putting up a display of note in the season so far, the odds of either of them impressing are very thin.
The other outside bets include Ordained One (A Imran Khan up), Imran Chisty-ridden Moon Star, Mallesh Narredu-steered Vijay Monarch and Prithviraj-trained Foreign Exchange.
There will also be prizes up for grabs for the public. A correct predicting of the top-four of the Kingfisher Derby could land a brand new Chevrolet Beat car. TVS bikes are also on offer along with an Acer Laptop and Titan wrist watches.
