IT should hire only computer engineers: Narayana Murthy

“Let others (other engineers) work in their respective fields. They should work on dams and factories etc to help India grow,” he said during an interaction with reporters on the sidelines of the 10th annual convocation of International Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore (IIITB).

His statement came as a response to the criticism of the infotech sector that it is ruining the human resource pool by attracting engineers from other branches too. He admitted that of the 25,000 employees Infosys recruited this year only 3,000 had proper computer background.

Murthy said that although India is ranked low in the Human Development Index and high on the corruption rates, there was still hope to engender confidence to remove poverty and other problems that India faced.

Addressing the convocation, Murthy asked students to be compassionate towards the less fortunate without compromising with the competitiveness of the country. He asked students to learn from the teaching of Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda.
As many as 113 students received graduation certificates on the occasion.
