The demand for Mechanical Engineering seats shot up by afternoon as E&C seats were almost filled up. Good placement record is one of the key factors which triggered the popularity of the stream, say students.

"I have always been fascinated by how the machine works. Movies like 3 Idiots have also changed my perception about the branch. Furthermore, it is a recession-proof discipline," says Rakshit Bansali, an engineering aspirant who got 5526 rank in CET. Lack of access to job opportunities deterred many students and parents to shun neighbourhood colleges.

Akash, another aspirant with 5699th rank said majority of seats in top colleges have already been selected and seats are now available in institutions such as Nitte, BMS and Sapthagiri colleges.

"Students are scared to take admission in a college located outside Bangalore. Many top companies prefer to recruit students from these colleges. This is one of the main reasons why candidates choose a city college,” Raghavendra Katti, a parent from Bellary said.

The counselling proceeded smoothly without any major glitches. S P Kulkarni, Administrative Officer, KEA said that a candidate was not spending more than 15 seconds to choose his or her seat. The KEA officials have been working round the clock to ensure that students don’t face any problems, he added.

He said the Authority has plans to showcase the features of various colleges like infrastructure, facilities from next year onwards. The giant screens which display the status of seat matrix will also show these aspects as well, he revealed.

Students who secured rank from 4800 to 6400 appeared for counselling on Saturday. On Sunday, candidates with  ranks from 6401 to 8200 would appear for counselling.
The number of seats available for selection stands at  34,745.
