The Baldwin Women’s Methodist College recently held Rang De 09, the annual fashion show by the Fashion and Apparel Design department of the college. The young student designers of the college showcased their collections at this event. The ten designers from the final year, who presented their collections were Adilakshmi, Bhavana K N, Swetha M, Aparna R, Rupal Sheth, Joice X, Suhasini Naidu, Kimte and Jahnavi D S.

The event started off with an invocation and a prayer with the guest of honour for the occasion being Sajini, principal of Baldwin Opportunity School. The welcome speech and introduction to the event was given by the principal of the college, Lydia P Samuel, post which the fashion show started.

The Cavalcade collection by Adilakshmi was a beautiful combination of gold and blue, while D-Zire... Beyond Heaven by Bhavana had shades of grey, red and turquoise green. Imperil Stride by Swetha M had dresses in raw silk and poly cotton, and Crusade by Aparna R had a highly military feel to it, with most of the clothes having the signature military print.

Following the first four collections was a vote of thanks to the external jury members and the sponsors of the collections. Then came a contemporary dance performance by the students to popular songs in different languages — Nenjukkul Peidhidum from Varanam Ayiram, Ninnindalle from Milana and Guzarish from Ghajini. This was followed by the last four collections.

The students were also awarded for their hard work. The best design collection went to Lianhaukim and the most practical collection was given to Aparna R. Joice X won the best accessorised collection and Rupal Sheth won the best conceptualised collection.

Says Geetha, head of the Fashion and Apparel Design department, “This fashion show is a part of the students’ course. This is the only chance they get in college to express their creativity and we go out of our way to ensure that things go well.” She adds, “Every year, it is the girls who organise everything, right from the basic inspiration to the final product on stage. Be it the theme of the collection or the choices of colours or the fine detailing, every single aspect of the show is organised by them.”

The Rang De fashion show has been taking place for four years now, and has opened many doors for these girls. “It’s four months of hard work that one gets to see on stage. The girls start preparing for Rang De right after their second year, when they are doing their internship. So all that they have learnt during their internship is applied to the show.” Geetha feels that it is a great exercise of event management for the students. “So when they go out, they know how to face the competitive world,” she notes.
