Kargil heroes remembered

Organised to commemorate the ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’, the Deputy Director General of Doordarshan Mahesh Joshi and Col (Retd) C M Uthaiah, Director Sainik Welfare Board and Maha Vir Chakra awardees namely Lt Col (Retd) P S Ganapati and Lt Cdr J P A Noronha honoured 31 dependents of war heroes hailing from Bangalore rural and urban districts, on the occasion. 

Joshi said that the sacrifices made by the soldiers and their families for ensuring the safety of fellow countrymen will always be remembered with gratitude. A step in this regard is the organisation of  ‘Smarananjali’, a tribute to the soldiers through cultural programme by Doordarshan Kendra next month, he said.

 Col (Retd) CM Uthaiah said that 11 years have passed since the Kargil Conflict in which 527 soldiers died and over 1,300 were injured. He felt that it was the responsibility of the society to look after the families of martyrs. The DSWR working in this regard and ensuring that the benefits reach the dependents he added. Maha Vir Chakra awardees namely Lt Col (Retd) P S Ganapati and Lt Cdr J P A Noronha reminisced about their days of action in war.
The Kargil armed conflict between India and Pakistan took place between May and July 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LOC).
