Last Updated 29 July 2010, 19:51 IST

Speaking on the occasion, Kalam said in three simple ways, the scourge of kidney diseases can be controlled. First, by creating awareness about the preventive measures, then making the treatment accessible and affordable and lastly a futuristic outlook through integration of different sciences.

Kalam suggested the hospital to set a separate preventive medicine and care department to educate the people about preventive measure for general health and for kidney problems, in particular. If the hospital can tie up with 108 emergency service, which has close to 2,000 ambulances, to offer dialysis, costs can be cut down.

Rajen Padukone, CEO of Manipal Hospital said that in India severe kidney failure affects two lakh people annually with only two treatment options available, namely long term dialysis or kidney transplantation. Out of which, less than 10 per cent of patients receive any kind of treatment, close to three per cent can afford a kidney transplant and more than 90 per cent of the patients die a slow and painful death.
