Senior income tax officials here on Friday said that they may need not extend the date for filing the income tax returns with three lakh people already having filed their returns since July 19.

Jubilant over the success of the special initiative of setting up counter for the second consecutive year, Income Tax Additional Secretary B Arulappa said: “Last year we saw about three lakh people filing their returns and the same number of people have already filed their returns this year with another day to go.”

No extention of last date
The additional secretary also  said the authority to extend the date for filing the returns lies with the New Delhi office. Nevertheless, Arulappa exuded confidence that the department might not need to extend the last date this year.

The 48,000 returns filed on Friday was more than double the average of 10,000-15,000 returns filed during the first two weeks of the commencement, officials said.
With the counter operating for just another day on Saturday, the Department is gearing up for the rush.

The officials further said: “We’ve learnt from last year’s experience that people like filing their returns on the last few days. With today (Friday) already being a busy day for us, we are geared up for the last day.”
