ZP Standing Committee on Education and Health President Manumuthappa alleged that the previous Chief Executive Officer Sundar Nayak had implemented the rainwater harvesting units in schools without bringing the matter to the notice of the elected representatives.

About 99 per cent of the units have become defunt. The rainwater harvesting units have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.  The funds have been misused in the project. In this background, the CEO should conduct a probe into the misuse of funds, he urged.

The rainwater harvesting units have been installed in 221 schools in the district. Of which, six units are functioning. This include Madikeri—4 and Virajpet—2 units, said ZP Chief Executive Officer  A B Ibrahim.

Rainwater harvesting was a good project which helps in the percolation of water.
Unfortunately, the head teachers have not taken steps for the effective implementation of the scheme, he added.  The meeting also decided not to pay the bill for the installation of water purifying units in those places. Zilla Panchayat President V M Vijaya sought to know the need for installing the units keeping elected representatives in darkness. Nobody has details on the implementation of the projects. The meeting took ZP Executive Engineer Keshavamurthy to task over the issue.

Keshavamurthy said that 58 water purifying units will be installed in those places where the water was polluted. Of which, the work on 38 units had been completed.
