Duet recital

The Nair Sisters — Veena Nair and Dhanya Nair — will present Vaasudevamupasmahe — a Bharatanatyam duet recital dedicated to Lord Krishna on August 20, 6.15 pm at the Multi Vision Theatre, Iskcon, Chord Road under the auspices of Suswaralaya College of Music, Bangalore and Iskcon. This recital comes as part of a festival of music and dance titled Yuva Chetana. The dancers will be accompanied by Ashwin Nair (nattuvamgam), Bharathi Venugopal (vocal), S V Balakrishna (mridangam) and Chitra Lingam (veena).

Discourse session

On August 21, 6.30 pm, a dance discourse session will be conducted by Ashish Mohan Khokar at the Alliance Francaise. On the occasion, French choreographer Michel Casanova will showcase with dancers a work-in-progress on how choreography is done on Western stage.


Drishti Art Centre, a dance institute located in Sahakarnagar headed by Bharatanatyam dancer Anuradha Vikranth, will be celebrating Nrityarpana, an offering of dance by the students as part of its anniversary celebrations on August 19, 6 pm at the Chowdaiah Memorial Hall. Anuradha will present 125 students, who will showcase a Bharatanatyam recital.


‘Tenali Rama’

Tales of Tenali Rama by Bangalore Little Theatre, will be held at Guru Nanak Bhavan, Vasanth Nagar from August 26 to 29 and at Ranga Shankara from September 1
to 3.

The timing is 7.30 pm for public and 11.30 am for weekday school shows/Saturday-Sunday for public.

Motley group will perform Antigone — an English play, adapted and directed by Pt Satyadev Dubey, on August 21 at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall. The play stars Ratna Pathak Shah, Naseeruddin Shah, Benjamin Gilani, Akash Khurana, Heeba Shah, Nivedita Bhattacharya, Divya Jagdale, Heeba Shah, Trishla Patel, Kenny Desai, Faisal Rashid and Parimal Aloke. 

The show starts at 7 pm. Tickets are available at Forum Mall, Koramangala and at the venue on August 21 (open at 9 am).

‘Aadaddella Olithe?’

Kriyative Theatre is back at Ranga Shankara with two more shows of the comedy,  Aadaddella Olithe? The play, inspired by the humourous stories of T Sunanadamma, is directed by Pramod Shiggaon and scripted by Sunder who also plays the lead along with Laxmi Chandrashekar.

Others in the cast are Vidya Venkatram, Ramakrishna Kananrapadi and Shilpa Rudrappa.
The shows at Ranga Shankara are on August 20 and 21 at 7.30 pm. Tickets are available at the venue.

Hindi play

Kalayan Theatre Group is staging a Hindi play, Swayamvar on August 19 at Ranga Shankara, J P Nagar at 7.30 pm. Written and directed by Mathura Kalauny, the play traces the story of five people trying to find meaning in relationships.  The cast include Sangeeta, Sanil,  Anish, Faria and Vipul.


Indian Ensemble is presenting Treadmill, a play in Hindi, on August 29 at Ranga Shankara. The timing is 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm.

The playwright is Sandeep Shikhar and the play is directed by Abhishek Majumdar. For telebookings, call 9008933996.

Silk collection

Shakespeare’s plays

The British Council and Bangalore Film Society is presenting Shakespeare Told and Retold, a film festival of Shakespeare’s plays till September 18 at NGMA Auditorium, No. 49, Manikyavelu Mansion, Palace Road.

Film screening

A screening of Indian and German films in the children’s section of the 4th Indo-German Film Festival, will be held from August 20 to 26 at Lavanya Theatre, St John’s Road. This is organised by the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, in collaboration with Suchitra Film Society and Asian Film Foundation, supported by HIVOS, Taj Enlighten Film Society and EFD Induction. ‘La Perla’

Contemporary works

An exhibition of recent sculptures by Forum’s Sculptors will be held at Chitrakala Parishat till August 22. The exhibition consists of works by contemporary practitioners of sculpture media in a broader sense.

The artists are M Raghurama, A R Manjunath, M Venkatesh, Omkara Murthy, Jagannath Jakkepalli, L Narasimha Prakash, Venkatachalapathy, M  Ramamurthy, Rajesh D Devangaon, B N Vichar, Nagappa Pradhani, K Raghavendra, M Vishwanath, Ravi Kumar B M.


Kynkyny Art will present an inspired show, Dakshin, celebrating art from Tamil Nadu.

Three talented and distinctive artists from the region — Santhana Krishnan, Sivabalan and Elayaraja — use mixed media works and paintings to create a vivid tapestry of the life, times and culture of the deep South.

The art works by the Chennai-based troika, which will be on view from August 26 to September 7, tell a compelling story — of fading traditions and still-carefully-preserved ways of life that stand on precarious ground in post-modern times.

‘Structure Within’

The Structure Within, an exhibition of paintings by Naagaraj K N, will be on display till August 23 at ADA Rangamandira, J C Road from 11 am to 7 pm.

Past shots

Tasveer and Bernard J Shapero Rare Books, in association with Ganjam, present One Hundred Vintage Views of India at Tasveer Gallery, Sua House, 26/1, Kasturba Cross Road till August 28.

The exhibition aims to introduce the subject of 19th century photography to potential collectors and institutions in India.  The timings are 10 am to 7 pm. The exhibition will be closed on Sundays.


Swasti, the Contemporary Art Gallery and HCG Foundation, is holding Notions, a charity art show featuring select work of artists JMS Mani, G Subramanyam and Mark Riesterer.

The art show is on view till August 20 and is open for public between 11 am and 6 pm. The show is being held at Swasti Art Gallery, HCG Towers, No. 8, P Kalinga Rao Road

(near Geo Hotel), Sampangiramnagar.


Illuminations, an exhibition of paintings and installation by Vishal Joshi, will be on view at Gallery Time & Space till August 21.


Flute treat

Ananya is organising a flute recital by N Rajkamal on August 28, 6 pm at Ananya Sabhangana, 4th Main, Malleswaram. H K Venkataram will play the violin. Arjunkumar will play the mridangam and on the ghatam will be M A Krishnamurthy.

There will also be a violin recital on August 29, 4 pm at the same venue by Aishwarya Venkataraman.

On mridangam, will be Vellore Ramabhadran and on khanjira will be Vinod Venkataraman.
A vocal recital by P P Ramakrishnan will be presented on August 29, 6.30 pm, also at Ananya Sabhangana.   

Vocal recital

Sri Rama Lalitha Kala Mandira is holding an endowment concert of R P Indira Devi on August 29, 5.30 pm. On the occasion, a Carnatic vocal music concert by Sangeetha Kala Ratna Neela Ramgopal will be held. R K Shriramkumar will be on violin, Patri Satishkumar on mridangam and S Kartik on ghatam. The venue is Rama Lalitha Kala Mandira Concert Hall.

Endowment concert

MES Kalavedi presents Dr R Rangachar Endowment Programme on August 21, 6.30 pm at the New Conference Hall, MES College, 15th Cross, Malleswaram. Vocalist Ravikiran will perform on the occasion.

‘Malhar Sangeet’

Gururao Deshpande Sangeet Sabha and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan are holding Malhar Sangeet Utsav on August 21, 6 pm at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Race Course Road.

The artistes participating are Pushparaj Koshti, Vijay Koparkar, Rajendra Nakod, Uddhav Shinde and Ravindra Katoti.

Folk ensemble

Alliance Française de Bangalore and Banglanatak Dot Com will present Bengal’s folk ensemble, the Bangla Qawwali Gaan on August 22, 7 pm.

The venue is auditorium, Alliance Francaise. This is a unique musical confluence of Fakiri music of Nadia, music of South Bengal and the tribal music of Purulia and Bankura. Entry is free.

The Rockstar Ustad Shafqat Amanata Ali, the singing sensation to hit the subcontinent in recent times, will perform at Chowdaiah Hall on August 24.

‘Utsav 2010’

Unnati is hosting Utsav 2010, a music festival, on the occasion of Gokulashtami. This three-week festival will be held till September 6 at the Unnati Centre in Kasturinagar, near NGEF. Shanmughapriya and Haripriya will be performing on August 19, 6 pm.
