Diamond thieves brought to India from Dubai

The Crime Branch, probing the August 23 heist, sought custody of the four accused, including a woman, to ascertain if they had taken any local help and also if they had committed any theft earlier.

The Metropolitan Magistrate asked the accused in English whether they had any complaints against police. They did not say anything as they knew only Spanish.The Magistrate then asked them in sign language whether they were ill-treated by police, to which they replied in the negative.

The four are accused of stealing diamonds, weighing 889 carats, from a stall at the International Jewellery Show held at suburban Goregaon. They had managed to flee India after the incident, but were detained in Dubai on Tuesday.

Three officials from Mumbai Crime Branch had left for UAE last night and brought the four accused here this morning, a senior police official said.

They were identified as Guerrero Lugo Elivia Grissel (24), a woman, Campos Molan Elias (39), Gonzalez Maldonado Mauricio (24) and Gutierez Orlando (30). The first three are Mexicans, while the fourth hails from VenezuelaAccording to police, the accused had done two recces of the exhibition hall before finally carrying out the theft at the stall belonging to Hong Kong-based diamond company, Dalumi Group.Each of them had paid Rs 3,600 as entrance charges for the three-day exhibition. On the last day of the show (August 23), the accused slipped away with a box containing 300 pieces of the precious stones.
They were detained at the Dubai airport on Tuesday after the city police issued look out notices for them.

The four had arrived in India on August 18. While three of them were staying in a hotel in South Mumbai, the Venezuelan Orlando was put up at the J W Marriot Hotel in suburban Juhu, police said.
