The 20-year-old Dane will meet Flavia Pennetta next. The seventh seeded Italian advanced easily, brushing past Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-3, 6-2.

Russian fourth seed Elena Dementieva had to battle her way into the last eight with a tough 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 win over Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko while sixth-seeded Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli crushed Australia's Anastasia Rodionova 6-3, 6-1.

In the men's draw, top seed Marcos Baghdatis rallied for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela to earn a quarterfinal spot.

Bopanna, Bhupathi win

Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Quereshi stunned fourth seed Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Martin Matkowski 6-3, 2-6, 10-5  in the doubles first round.

Also advancing were Mahesh Bhupathi and Belarusian Max Mirnyi, who beat Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak 3-6, 7-6(1), 10-4 .
