England wrest command

Stubborn Trott-Broad in record eighth-wicket stand
Last Updated 28 August 2010, 18:16 IST

Broad shared a world-record eighth-wicket partnership of 332 with Jonathan Trott (184) after England had been reeling at 102 for seven in their first innings on Friday.

They recovered to reach 446, a total which assumed intimidating proportions when Pakistan stumbled to 46 for three at tea.

Broad, taking the new ball from the Pavilion end, moved a delivery away from Yasir Hameed (2) who was comfortably caught at second slip by Graeme Swann.

Imran Farhat fell to James Anderson for six, edging a catch to wicketkeeper Matt Prior. Broad then bowled Pakistan's leading batsman Mohammad Yousuf for a duck.

Pakistan captain Salman Butt counter-attacked with three fours off a Steven Finn over to remain unbeaten on 26 at tea.

Earlier, Trott, who scored 226 against Bangladesh at the same venue this year, took a single off the first ball he faced to bring up his 150.

The pair overhauled the previous eighth-wicket world mark of 313 set by Pakistan's Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq against Zimbabwe in 1996 and looked in no trouble whatsoever before Broad missed a sweep off Ajmal 15 minutes before lunch and was hit on the pads.

Anderson followed for six and Trott was the last man out, caught behind off Wahab Riaz.
