11 lakh saplings planted in Banaskanth in a single day

Individuals from over ten district talukas, members of taluka panchayats, gram panchayats, religious institutions, school and college students, besides co-operative organizations participated in this day-long exercise.

Inaugurating the 'Go Green' function at Juna Deesa near here, Panchayat minister Narottam Patel warned the cattle owners to ensure that no sapling planted along the roadside should be destroyed during cattle grazing.

According to Patel, each individual will be the caretaker for the saplings he has planted. The plantation work was in progress at 6,000 locations in the district. "The preparations for such a mammoth exercise has been going on since last one and a half year. The record plantation was made possible as we could evacuate area of about 3,000 acres of land from land grabbers," District Collector R J Patel told PTI.

On July 31, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation claimed to have planted 9.19 lakh saplings in one single day. Officially, Pakistan holds the world record of planting 541,176 mangrove saplings in a single day near Keti Bander,in Thatta district in Sindh region in 2009.
