"The film is not melodramatic. There are emotions but there are light moments too," Johar told PTI. Directed by debutant Siddharth Malhotra, the film is a Hindi adaptation of Julia Roberts starrer 1998 hit 'Stepmom' and stars Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in the lead roles. The film releases this Friday.

Johar said he decided to rope in Malhotra for the ambitious project because the young director brings certain sensitivity to the story. "Siddharth has brought in an inherent sensitivity to the story, which is an insight into the life of a modern Indian family," Johar added.

The film is about a family of a man, his three kids, his ex-wife and his girlfriend, who are brought together under the same roof due to the demand of the situation. How they cope up with the new developments in their lives is what forms the crux of 'We Are Family'.

"When you make a family film, you know that there is one set of audience that you have comfortably covered. However, in case of 'We Are Family' we also wanted to win over youngsters," Johar said.

Johar is confident about the film's success as not many films belonging to this genre are being churned out in Bollywood today. "I guess the last film which came close to being a family outing was 'Paa'. Before that, the only quintessential family film was 'Baghban' which was quite a while ago," Johar said.
