Last Updated 21 June 2009, 17:26 IST

The pilgrims began the 16- km arduous journey at 5 am, a spokesman of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) said. “Work on road from Pahalgam to Chandanwari, the first halting station en route to the cave, is through, while snow clearance work on the track upwards is going on a war-footing basis,” Deputy Commissioner of Anantnag, Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmad, who is also the Yatra Officer, said.

Ahmad asked the Pahalgam Development Authority to speed up their efforts and get the track cleared on a priority basis so that the traditional route could be opened soon.
The SASB will review status of the route on June 25 before allowing pilgrims to proceed along the route.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP) Kuldeep Khoda ordered the deployment of two rescue operation teams at Sheshnag and Panjtarni en route the shrine. The two teams, comprising 10 members each, will be provided with rescue equipment and logistics by armed police. They will work under the supervision of senior police officers on Yatra duty.
