The campus of BMS College of Engineering was filled with energy and excitement on the inaugural day of the first year BE and B Arch classes. Though the freshers and their parents had a confused look on their faces, the senior students and faculty made all efforts to make them feel comfortable. The seniors even wore t-shirts with slogans ‘Ragging Free Campus’ and ‘No Ragging’ to make the freshers feel comfortable.

The 65th batch of freshers was welcomed along with the Teacher's Day celebrations. N R Narayana Murthy, chief mentor of Infosys Technologies Limited, who is a perfect role model for budding engineers, was the chief guest.

The well-organised programme commenced on time with an invocation song. All were eager to listen to N R Narayana Murthy who began the speech with his college memories. “I was in the same position 48 years ago when I joined my engineering course. I didn’t miss a single class even when there was a college strike. Discipline should start from classroom itself,” he said.

“Technology is all about using the knowledge of science to make life better. Hence, your focus should be on learning and not on exams. Learn the concepts of engineering science fully and never hesitate to ask questions if you don’t understand,” he suggested.
He advised the students to make a difference to the society.

“Today, India has been getting international recognition thanks to the developments in technology. Though we have achieved a lot, there is more to achieve. You have a huge responsibility as well as a great possibility to build the nation and at the same time, you are also blessed with an opportunity,” he said. He ended his speech by wishing the freshers a great success and hoped to see many of them at Infosys in 2015.

Vijay Gore, the trustee of BMS Educational Trust, informed the freshers about the rules and regulations of the college and appealed to the newcomers to make the institution and the parents proud. As a part of Teacher's Day celebrations, some of the teachers in college were felicitated. Dr K Mallikarjun Babu, the Principal, welcomed the gathering and spoke about the facilities available on campus.

B V Acharya, the chairman of BMS Educational Trust, presided over the function.
