Last Updated 13 September 2010, 16:33 IST

The board is conducting the test for the first time as part of its ongoing examination reforms.

There will be a separate test in each of the five main subjects i.e. English, Hindi, Social Science, Mathematics and Science. A student may appear for one or more subject(s) as one test will be held on a single day.  The paper-pencil test, aimed to assess the mental abilities as well as skills in the subject, will give students an idea about their grasp of the respective subject. Experts say the test will help students in choosing subjects for their higher studies.
The test also aims to assess student's abilities and skills to apply concepts and principles to every day life situation, states a CBSE circular.

Problem solving skills, ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate a given situation on the basis of his knowledge of the subject, will also be tested.

The two-and-a-half hour test will be based on the class IX and class X syllabi. The paper will comprise multiple choice questions different from the conventional question paper of Class X claims, the board.

The test will provide feedback to students and parents on the students’ performance. It will also provide feedback to schools on levels of learning of their students and setting goals, priorities and targets in their future plan.
