Last Updated 17 September 2010, 15:18 IST

The Bhikku Square to Shastri Square stretch will now be known as Hemant Karkare Road. Karkare, then heading the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), had died fighting terrorists during the attack on Mumbai on November 26, 2008.

As ATS chief, he was handling the September 29, 2008 bomb blast in the city in which six persons were killed. The explosion had taken place at Bhikku Square. The ATS probe had led to the arrest of 11 accused, including Sadhavi Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit. Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC) took the decision to name the road as a mark of tribute to Karkare.

Jan Surajya Party MLA Moulana Mufty Ismail today unveiled Karkare's name board in the presence of MMC Commissioner Jeevan Sonawane.
