Last Updated 18 September 2010, 16:42 IST

The landslide is causing concern as Linganamakki, Gerusoppa and Talakalale Dam sites are located in 12-20 km distance. The Forest Department officials visited the spot on Saturday.

People living around Bhimeshwar, a tributary of Sharavathi, suspected landslide in the upstream when they noticed water in the river becoming muddy. Receiving the information, Kalave reached the spot with help from the local residents.

Trees with diameter of 25 feet to 36 feet have been submerged in the mud in a large scale. The landslide has created a plain surface - 150 to 350 feet wide and a kilometre long.

Since the area is remote from human habitation, there was no loss of life. People in the nearby locality said a similar landslide occurred six years ago in the vicinity.
