Nagendra, son of Chandrakala and Murthy, was attacked by the pack of ferocious dogs when he followed his mother to fetch drinking water from a public tap early Monday morning.

Though a passerby, Suresh, managed to shoo away the dogs, the child was already grievously injured. He sustained deep bites on his neck and stomach, and died on the spot.
Irate villagers protest

The early morning incident sent shock waves among the villagers and built a sense of the anger against officials who had failed to check the canine menace in the locality. Angry villagers and traders in the hobli observed a bandh.

The villagers blamed the increasing number of meat shops in the village for the aggressive behaviour of the dogs. The dogs are daily fed with wastes outside these shops and alleged that officials had failed to keep tab on the illegal meat shops.

The Grama Panchayat convened an emergency meeting and announced Rs two lakh compensation to the family. Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer Krishnegowda said the TP would recommend suspension of GP secretary and planning director.
