Even as elaborate preparations have been going on at the southern temple town for the festivities, lightning amid unexpected heavy rain struck the “Arsenal Tower,” causing a crack at a height of 142 feet, official sources at Thanjavur said.
A small portion of the wall on the tower’s southern side fell down injuring four persons who were then taking cover from the rain in the Palace complex.
The eight-storied “Arsenal Tower” is among the key monuments in the Thanjavur Fort Palace complex. The complex is under the State Department of Archaeology while the “Big Temple” itself is a UNESCO-declared heritage monument.
