Modi's Karnataka visit: Twitter war breaks out between BJP, Cong

Last Updated 02 May 2018, 12:35 IST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hit the campaign trail for the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections from Tuesday, threw a challenge to Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

He wanted Rahul to talk for 15 minutes on the achievements of the Congress government in the state, in any language he is comfortable with, without reading out from a piece of paper.

The Prime Minister also dared the Congress chief to pronounce properly the name of legendary engineer and statesman Sir M Visvesvaraya, at least four to five times in his speech.

Following this, a Twitter war broke out between the two parties, and both the parties are leaving no chance to malign each other in an attempt get an upper hand in the election.

On Wednesday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah challenged the Prime Minister on Twitter asking him to speak about the achievements of B S Yeddyurappa’s government in Karnataka for 15 minutes by looking at a paper.

“Modi ji you are dispensing free advise about being courteous to Shri Deve Gowda. We all know how respectfully you treat your mentor Shri LK Advani & how courteous you were to HDD in 2014. How about showing some courtesy to this 75-year-old man who is stooping so low before you?” he added by posting a picture of Yeddyurappa and Modi.

"PM has suddenly discovered love & respect for Shri HD Deve Gowda. Shri Modi had not long ago said he will send Shri Deve Gowda to a retirement home. Is this new love a sign of the not so secret understanding between BJP & JDS?” he added.

In retaliation, BJP has shared a video depicting the increase of crimes in the state

“CM says "Crime is not increasing in K'taka abnormally" Under CM Siddu, -188% increase in rapes -53% increase in sexual harassment -43% increase in cases under SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act Mr CM, Is this not abnormal? If not, we fear about your definition of abnormal!” BJP tweeted.

On Tuesday, Narendra Modi talked about 'Fasal Bima Yojana' and mentioned about BJP’s contribution to it in the state. Siddaramaiah today retaliated by tweeting, "Sir, Govt of Karnataka paid 50% of the cost of the PM Fasal Beema Yojana. Ours is the only Govt in the country that has deployed IT to directly pay the insurance amount into farmers’ account. Also, crop insurance is old UPA scheme. So, have a heart & share credit where it is due."
