Elections 2024: In Nanded, 2 brothers, 2 parties, 2 fronts

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The historic city of Nanded is witnessing a never-before-seen election - when two brothers from two different parties are fighting on two different fronts. 

The by-elections to the Lok Sabha seat of Nanded is being held along with the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections. 

The six Assembly segments of Nanded are -- Bokhar, Nanded North, Nanded South, Naigaon, Deglur (SC) and Mukhed.

The by-elections have been necessitated because of the death of Vasant Chavan, who passed away on August 6 at the KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad, where he was admitted following multiple compilations and breathlessness. 

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Vasant Chavan had defeated sitting MP of BJP Prataprao Patil Chikhalikar by 59,442 votes under difficult circumstances. 

On September 5, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge visited the family in Nanded and condoled the death of the late leader. 

Later, Chavan’s son Ravindra Chavan was nominated to contest his late father’s seat. However, the BJP sprang a surprise and fielded Dr Santuk Hambarde, the BJP district chief of Nanded. 

On the other hand, Nanded South will see a contest between Mohan Hambarde of the Congress, Anand Tidke Patil of Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Farooq Ahmed of Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi. 

Hambarde brothers - Santuk (BJP) and Mohan (Congress) are contesting Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha, respectively.

Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls will take place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP will be going up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress try to make their mark. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the JMM faces a new challenge after Hemant Soren's recent arrest and Champai, a longstanding party member, joining the BJP. The Haryana election resulted in a shock loss for Congress, which was looking to galvanize on the Lok Sabha poll performance, while J&K also saw the grand old party eventually stepping away from the cabinet, with Omar Abdullah's JKNC forming government. It remains to be seen if the upcoming polls help BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A.
