In Karnataka election 2018, INC candidate N.H.Shivashankara Reddy won the Gauribidanur Assembly seat after securing 69000 votes. The INC candidate defeated JD(S) candidate C.R.Narasimhamurthy by a margin of 9168 votes.

After the 2018 polls, JD(S) and Congress formed a coalition government with H D Kumaraswamy as the Chief Minister.
