Jasleen Royal sure knows to get your attention, and it’s not only because of her unique name. She can play the mouth organ, the tambourine and the guitar and sing at the same time. If that’s not enough to pop out your eyeballs, she can sing in both Punjabi and Hindi, and can compose music as well.

.
Little wonder then that this talented young girl is making a splash in Bollywood. Having just tasted success with two songs in the recently-released Baar Baar Dekho (‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahaan’ and ‘Nachde Ne Saare’), she is now awaiting her next film, Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay. “Well, actually till now just minor projects were coming my way. I think I am now prepared for the big stuff!” says the 20-something, brimming with anticipation. Jasleen has composed and sung the popular single ‘Panchi Hojavan’, and has also lent her voice for the songs ‘Preet’ from Sonam Kapoor-starrer Khoobsoorat and ‘Badla Badla’ from Badlapur.

Jasleen loves to both compose and sing and is as ambitious as they come. “I am the sort who’d get up and seize the moment. I am quite impatient. I can’t wait and twiddle my thumbs for anyone to give me an answer. I’d rather find out about things for myself. If it is going to work out, it will. If not, then I’d rather chase after something else. And it works for me,” she says, alluding to her recent songs.

The Shivaay team heard the singer-composer for the first time when she was performing live and they loved her work. As for Baar Baar Dekho, she connected with director Nitya Mehra over social media to ask if she needed a fresh sound for her film. “I had a little work to show by then — Haramkhor and the yet-to-be-released Dhumketu, but I showed up at the Dharma Productions office and asked if they needed me — and they did! I am not sure who else would have done that,” she laughs.

Jasleen comes with no formal training or godfather in this industry. She believes that she has a natural flair for music. “My father loves Bollywood — music et al! That’s possibly my only connection with the industry. I love to listen to everything — from pop to hip-hop to jazz to Bollywood, you name it,” she says.

The minstrel has a drool-worthy list of directors she would love to work with and brother-sister duo Farhan and Zoya Akhtar top it. “I think my musical sensibility best matches theirs,” she confesses. “Rhea Kapoor, Yash Raj and Dharma are the others whom I would love to work and continue to work with.”

Jasleen has worked with senior artistes including Swanand Kirkire and the younger lot like Siddharth Mahadevan with equal ease. “I think age doesn’t matter when you are singing; the style and the wavelength does.” Among contemporary singers and composers she likes the work of Divya Kumar, Tochi Raina, Amit Trivedi and Sachin-Jigar. “After Shivaay, watch out for me again next year. I hope to make a bigger splash,” she says, indicating some aces up her sleeve.
