<p>Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said his government requested the Centre to set up a permanent army camp in Dhubri, a Muslim-dominated district, that witnessed communal tension recently. </p><p>Sarma made the announcement after a visit to the district in western Assam, during which he took stock of the law and order situation in the district. </p><p>"Normalcy has been restored in Dhubri town and efforts are underway to preserve the present conditions of peace and stability. We are planning to set up a permanent army camp in the vicinity of Dhubri town and discussions with the Centre in this regard are going on," Sarma told reporters after the review meeting.</p><p>This was Sarma's second visit to the district since June 13, when he visited following communal tension. Sarma had then issued an order for shoot-at-sight during night to counter communal tension following recovery of beef from near a Hanuman temple in ward number 3 in Dhubri town. </p><p>Sarma said at least 150 people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident while the "prime accused" was absconding. While BJP workers blamed the Muslims, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi suspected that BJP and RSS workers could do so in order to create communal tension and reap political benefits ahead of Assembly elections next year. </p><p>Sarma on Tuesday said, "We should strongly handle those trying to put beef near temples and create communal tension. Because if beef is put near temples, another religious community might put meat not accepted by the opposite religious community." </p><p>Dhubri shares the border with Bangladesh and the district is one of the epicenters of politics in Assam over the vexed problem of illegal migration from the neighbouring country. A stretch of the riverine border has still remained unfenced in Dhubri, aiding illegal migration and cross border crime. </p><p>Dhubri is a stronghold of Congress and Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF. While Congress candidate and former minister Rakibul Hussain was elected from Dhubri Lok Sabha seat, ousting Ajmal, Congress and AIUDF hold most of the Assembly seats in the district. </p><p>Rakibul was Sarma's colleague in Tarun Gogoi-led minsitry in Assam. Sarma, along with a few other MLAs, however, switched to BJP in August 2015. BJP ousted Congress from power in the state in 2016 and Sarma became the CM in 2021 when the saffron party formed government for the second straight term. </p>
