<p>Guwahati: Assam Cabinet on Sunday asked the state police to register a case against a Pakistani national following CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's suspicion about his links with wife of Congress' deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi.</p><p>After the Cabinet meeting, Sarma told reporters that police would probe activities of Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and his alleged links with Gogoi's wife, Elizabeth Colebourn, a British national. </p>.Himanta has 'foreign investment', claims Congress leader; Assam CM files criminal defamation case.<p>Sarma said Elizabeth worked in Lead Pakistan, an NGO led by Ali Sheikh and had visited Pakistan even after her marriage with Gogoi in 2023. The NGO worked on the issue of climate change, he said. </p><p>"Ali's social media posts suggest his anti-India and anti-Assam sentiments. So visits of an MP's wife to Pakistan even after her marriage definitely draws a lot of suspicion and questions. So the Cabinet today asked Director General of Police to register a case and investigate. The police will try to find out if the ISI had any links to this because Assam was found to be under scanner of the ISI," Sarma said. </p><p>"Elizabeth had also worked closely during campaigning for Gaurav Gogoi in the last two Lok Sabha elections in 2019 and 2024. So police will also look into whether she flouted her visa norms by taking part in the election process of India," he said.</p><p>Sarma had earlier questioned why Gogoi visited the office of Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi with a group of youths associated with his think tank, Youth Forum on Foreign Policy. </p>.In a first, Kokrajhar to host inaugural sitting of Assam assembly on Monday.<p>Reacting to Sarma's claims, Gaurav called the allegation "malicious and baseless" and warned legal action. Sarma, however, welcomed legal action by Gogoi. </p><p>Putting his weight behind Gaurav, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday said that Himanta launched the "smear campaign" as Gaurav won the Lok Sabha elections in Jorhat in Assam in 2024 despite strong campaigns by Sarma and his Cabinet colleagues. </p><p>Ramesh said Himanta is scared of present campaign being led by Gaurav against alleged corruption by the CM's wife and the family, ahead of next year's Assembly elections. </p>
