<p>BJP worker Dhirendra Singh, who had allegedly shot dead his rival in the presence of senior officials during a meeting in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, was on Monday remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by a court.</p>.<p>Singh, who had been arrested form the state capital of Lucknow on Sunday, told the cops that he had opened fire in ''self defense'' after being 'attacked' by his rivals.</p>.<p>Police said that they would seek remand of the main accused to interrogate him and also recover the murder weapon.</p>.<p>Singh, a close aide of BJP MLA from Ballia Surendra Singh, had sprayed his rival Jai Prakash Pal with bullets after an altercation during the meeting convened by the officials to discuss allotment of fair price shops at Durjanpur village in the district.</p>.<p>Meanwhile upset over the support to the accused by Surendra Singh, the BJP leadership has issued him a show cause notice and asked him not to interfere with the investigation.</p>.<p>According to the sources in the BJP here, party's national president J P Nadda spoke to the UP BJP president Swatantra Deo Singh on Monday and expressed his displeasure over the conduct of the MLA.</p>.<p>''The MLA has been asked to explain his remarks supporting the accused...action will be taken against him if his reply is found to be unsatisfactory,'' a senior state BJP leader here said.</p>.<p>The MLA had said that he was supporting the accused as both of them were from the same caste.<br /><br /><strong>Also Read | <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/national/ballia-shooting-j-p-nadda-steps-in-to-check-mlas-conduct-904039.html" target="_blank">Ballia shooting: J P Nadda steps in to check MLA's conduct</a></strong></p>.<p>''I am even ready to quit politics to safeguard the interests of the thakur community....I shall begin a fast unto death if the police do not register the complaint from the family of the accused,'' he had said.</p>.<p>The opposition parties have demanded stern action against the lawmaker.</p>
