The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) extended to May 12 the deadline to receive comments for a consultation paper on the pricing and allocation of microwave access (MWA) and microwave backbone (MWB) radio frequency carriers.

Earlier, the Department of Telecom asked the Trai to furnish its recommendations on the subject.

The Trai then sought comments from stakeholders on issues such as the number of microwave carriers needed to be assigned to telecom operators in case of 2G, 3G and BWA technologies, as well as the preferred mechanism of its assignment, like administrative mechanisms or auctions.

Microwave technology is widely deployed by operators to provide point-to-point radio frequency links in mobile networks. All voice and data signals like phone conversations, SMSes or video downloads, travel through the backhaul network.
