Brisk business was seen in select branches of post office and several banks in the city which offered to sell gold and silver coins at discount prices to people who were in a rush to buy jewellery on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras.

Falling just two days before Diwali, Dhanteras is the day when people swarm the market to purchase jewellery, utensils, electronic goods and seek blessings for wealth and success.

“It’s the most auspicious day to buy silver, gold or diamond. We have a wide range of silver encrusted bangles, rings, necklaces, ear-rings, maang-tika, hair pins and diamond pendants, depending on one’s affordability. And people in hordes are buying jewellery, notwithstanding the media report on inflation and hiked fuel price,” said Sunil Agarwal of Alankar Jewellers.

Banks and post offices chose to forgo thier customary weekly holiday to attract those who could not go to the far-off jewellery shops on the occasion of Dhanteras. They offered discounts up to 7 per cent on gold coins of various denominations. The designated branches of State Bank of India and Central Bank of India too offered a discount on sale of both gold and silver coins.
