New electronic policy in two months, says IT secretary

The Centre is likely to roll-out a new electronic policy in two months, which aims to boost design and innovation along with domestic electronic production in the country, Ajay Prakash Sawhney, Electronics and IT Secretary said on Saturday.

"There is a huge opportunity in India for the emergence of next-generation devices, which don't exist at the moment and the new policy will look at encouraging design and innovation for the development of innovative products," he said.

There is an ample scope in India for medical electronics, automotive electronics, power electronics, defence electronics. The government has already held wide consultation with industry players and other stakeholders to address their issues regarding the domestic production of electronic, he said.

The first national policy on electronics was rolled out in 2012 which offered incentives to companies setting up manufacturing units in the country.

As per the government data in 2015-16 total 110 million mobile phones have been produced and in value terms mobile producing industry manufactured mobile phones worth Rs 54,000 crore in 2015-16.
