<p>Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) on Saturday arrested the key accused and chairman of Khyati Multispeciality Hospital at the centre of <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/pmjay">Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna</a> (PMJAY) scam which was busted after two persons died following their angioplasty, which police have alleged, was not required.</p><p>Kartik Patel, 60, the chairman of the hospital, was arrested soon after he landed at the Ahmedabad International Airport late on Friday night. He had arrived from Dubai where he was hiding.</p><p>Police said soon after the alleged scam surfaced he left for Australia on November 3 with his wife and travelled to New Zealand and then moved to Dubai. DCB officials said that he had to return after his wife fell sick.</p><p>According to police, Patel is one of the nine partners of Khyati hospital and ninth accused to have been arrested in this case. Patel, who started his first business venture of renting video cassettes and became a real estate developer and opened several educational institutes, started his first hospital in 2021 reportedly after he couldn't get admitted during covid-19 pandemic. Patel has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, defrauding the PMJAY scheme to earn illicit financial benefits, among other charges. He is facing three FIRs. His arrest came days after his anticipatory bail pleas were rejected by the court. </p><p>Investigation revealed that the hospital in the past three years carried out medical camps in 69 villages across the state in which a total of 5,637 people were examined. The police are scanning details of 3,842 beneficiaries of PPJAY who underwent treatment at this hospital from September 1 to October 28, 2024. 112 patients out of 3,842 died following the treatment. </p><p>During investigation, police also busted a fraud of Ayushman Bharat health cards. It was revealed that a group of accused allegedly used "government portal's technical vulnerabilities to alter source codes and created approximately 1200–1500 fake Ayushman Bharat cards." </p><p>The scam rocked the state government forcing it to come up with stringent guidelines for empanelled hospitals across the state. </p>
