Jaya moves SC for bail

Last Updated 09 October 2014, 19:40 IST
Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalitha approached the Supreme Court on Thursday challenging the Karnataka high court order refusing bail and suspension of a four-year jail term in the disproportionate assets case.

In a special leave petition, the three-time chief minister sought bail contending that she is a 66-year-old woman and is suffering from various ailments. The petition also stated that there was no point in lodging her in jail as the Karnataka high court would take at least four years to decide on her appeal.

The petition also contended that she has been sentenced to simple and not rigorous imprisonment, and in such cases grant of bail is the norm.  According to sources, Jayalalitha’s counsel may mention the petition before the court of the Chief Justice of India on Friday and seek urgent hearing.
